Wept and wept for this one, like I hadn't in a long time. The story is as much sweet as it is heartbreaking. Told through the eyes of girl coming of age, it deals with the consequences of war and violence on the displacement of entire cultures, phenomenon that we are still experiencing today.

This book has really good insights but I listened to the audiobook and the pronunciation of most of the Spanish words drove me crazy! Oaxaca is not pronounced Oashaca and reggaeton is not reggAton. Those were some of the worst ones so they really stuck with me. I just think that a book that speaks so much of the Latinx experience and discusses how Latinxs are misunderstood should get things like pronunciation better
