Something tells me this will end up on my WISH-I-NEVER shelf, but here goes anyway.

This had just gotten better and better, and now it's the only book I'm reading and I can't wait to read it again after I've put out down for a time. all consuming. but I will be sad when it's over.

oh Jesus Christ, author trying to shove his point down your throat in preface. moan, whine, she created her image for the public, unauthentic.... Mr Author, you are aware you are describing an ACTRESS, yes??? again with the sigh.

seriously, though. what is up with that picture on the cover. I think it's Cecil beaton, as I was just looking thru his pics the other day, but this is his worst of hers! I can see how maybe this author actually doesn't like KH, at all. le sigh.

oh so glad they put the movie poster on the cover here. Natalie Portman was so sexy sexy in this role; it makes me tingle just to look at the pic.

rather like this. I know there's a moral to the story but I'm enjoying it as a simple read for now.

not at all sure where this is all going. of course, it is an Oprah book, but nothing like the amazing _WHITE OLEANDER_

easy read. not nearly his best. more sex than his others, seems like. maybe he was having his monthlies when he wrote it.

oh yeah gonna do this again! well, again, I say, but I've never read all 5 books. looking forward to it. must get Philip K Dick's bad taste out of my mouth. ew, that sounds dirty.

where'd my crappin' progress note go? just saying this has more depth and layers than I thought this guy (poseur/wannabe photo in back cover) had in him. the main character has a gambling addiction and a wicked self-destructive streak to boot. I found myself cringing at some of his behavior, which means I was drawn in by the writing. +1

oh yeah and the cultural aspects of the setting in China, mainland versus islands, the language aspects, and also the focus on the supernatural and superstitious beliefs of the natives. very interesting!

Meh Meh, free book, nothing else to read until I can get to the library again. right now it's running at 2/5 stars bc its pretty much a waste of time.

I wasn't sure, but I'm really liking it. the Kalaj character is fascinating trying to figure out WTF he's about. though, I'd rather the author didn't really put the "deeper meaning" under the dialogue bc the tale is interesting enough to carry you thru. Kalaj is, of course, a sociopath (charismatic). I can't wait till the main character realizes this and runs far far away. he's only called him a creep so far, tho.

still trying to make it thru the sad cafe but I'm nut ask that interested, in the end, I guess. not going to quit. tho.

reading this again from the beginning, as I got side tracked, it's wonderful and fresh any time I pick it up.

First lines: "I grew up and what some people would call a mobile home and what other, snobbier people might call a manufactured home, but I was always fine with calling it a trailer. That's right, I said I grew up in a trailer. Fuck you."

a few pages ear-marked that I'll save for perpetuity, which is more than I imagined. a good thing.

I hate it. I had no idea how much I would or could. The more I think and write, I realize that actually my sensibilities are offended.
