The whole section about Katie giving birth to Francie and Johnny’s concurrent pointless meandering has me so ill .. the way she is in labor for 24 hours and Johnny comes back from a night of drunken debauchery that concludes with his firing .. but he has the audacity to both diminish her strains, and claim that he is “a real man now”. What mill have you been through, Johnny?

TLDR I hate Johnny. Kudos Betty.

It’s one thing to feel heard. It’s another thing to have the most devilish bits of your being spotlighted, validated, then both commiserated & celebrated by the utterance of an accommodating and playful “girl”. Even if you aren’t queer, this book is a sexual homecoming, fraught with all the most commonplace yet taboo erotic desires, quotidian gender dynamics, & power plays of women’s relationships.

I can't believe I have procrastinated on this book for so long... I needed it years ago! But also today!
I cannot describe how validated and heard I feel by reading VW's words. I cannot imagine the kind of courage it took for her to publish something so bold, so controversial, and so gloriously hilarious in her era. What a timeless masterpiece! I think every woman should read this at least once in her life.
