Audiobook narrator odd. Perhaps a bit coy?

I think the problem is that the inserted author is annoyingly pompous.

I’m not certain that it’s working for me. It feels pompous and self congratulatory.

Jakin nodded languidly. Languidly? It makes no sense in context. He’s anxious, uneasy, why languid?

Cache is not pronounced cachet. One syllable, rhymes with cash.

I wish audiobook readers would check pronunciation.

Could not stay engaged.

Occasionally annoyed by Americanisms. I don’t think England has any “classic speakeasy vibes”, since there was no Prohibition there.

I’m stalled. I’m not feeling this one. Not certain why.

Still too modern.

Persona: 1917, "outward or social personality," a Jungian psychology term, from Latin persona "person" (see person). Used earlier (1909) by Ezra Pound in the sense "literary character representing voice of the author." (Etymonline)

Terminology very modern. “Life on their own terms”. Seems unlikely thing for h to think.

“Networking” absolutely not used in 1860s.

From etymonline: network: “by 1982 in reference to persons, "to interact with others to exchange information and develop contacts."

No idea how far thru.

This is delightful! It was a Kindle Unlimited book with a sale audiobook at Audible. Good narration, really good story so far.

I have mixed feelings about the ages. Tarquin doesn’t act like what I think of as a 35-year old. But that’s in a world where that’s over a third of a life. In a world where people are in their middle age at 70, 35 is quite young.

I think that could have been a bit more explicit, though.

I am totally not sold on the romance.

The description of “the intruder” on the ships is a bit underdeveloped.

Maybe it’s a juxtaposition effect, coming right after a scene between Tarquin and Naira that was straight out of a Regency romance between the viscount and the gentlewoman masquerading as a chambermaid.

A little unbalanced. The "my liege" plus corporations isn’t totally convincing. Also, the narrator has chosen an odd, gruff, sort of NYC accent that makes the woman protagonist (can’t remember her name, starts with N) sound like a sixty year old man. His native accent seems to be posh UK.

Viscera are in the abdomen, not the head and neck.
