It’s a fun read, but the ‘no-one-can-possibly-hurt-me’ trope is kinda boring. She got away practically unfazed from something supposedly 10x stronger than Amarantha? With NO HELP? Boringgggg

I genuinely don’t think this book was written to be the best novel ever written, so I’m going to read it as such. I don’t have the expectations of a high fantasy with intricately woven court politics, I have the expectations that this is gonna be a little trashy romantasy — and those expectations are gladly being met.

Reads like a professor wrote it, and not in an amazing way, in a ‘I’m better than my peers and my students and I’m going to use the most laborious vocabulary imaginable to sound pretentious’ kind of way.

I’ve been reading reviews of people saying this is extremely slow — I think it’s simply excellently paced world building. This is the stepping stone for SEVERAL high fantasy trilogies, of course it’s going to be ‘slow’.

I so hope that the second installment in this series moves past this weird beastiality subplot. It’d freaking me out…

Samantha is so better than this that she doesn’t realize she and everyone surrounding her, including Ava, are the exact same people. They’re all human, with problems, and they’re all fucking fake about having problems. Or maybe, their problem IS that they’re fake. Like Samantha….

I like the father’s wife, I think she’s a character that will learn to care within her own reason.

Picked this one back up today. It’s a fun, not all that serious fancy story where I’m rooting for Nathaniel and Elizabeth to make out and make up

The pacing has slowed down quite a bit, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but in my opinion if it doesn’t pick back up soon it will start to drag. Ava’s character continues to irritate me, she’s so hypocritical. Actually, I don’t like a single character. It doesn’t hinder the story at all, as I’m sure I’m not meant to like any of them, but it grates the nerves.

The main character must be partially schizophrenic, to explain most of the ‘violent’ crimes in the city. My prediction right now is that Eleanor is a witch and is pushing her mental health further to get her to crack under pressure. Also — that dance scene was super fucking creepy dude, definitely got the chills as I was reading by candlelight!

I like the underlying tones of horror so far, but the random pop culture references drizzled in really whiplash me and take me out of the story ._.

I do not like Burrich, he has such weird sexual expectations for a fourteen year old… 🤢
