In giving weight to those who shout loudest-who are more often than not the least informed social media strengthens allegations and weakens facts. It emboldens prejudice and blurs the line between accusation and truth.
As a result, the presumption of innocence is no longer so inviolable as it once was, or as it should be if we want democracy to survive.
