So very well done. By page 95, the terrifying story is barreling through it's first big wall. Just fantastically written.

I am in pain reading this bizarro world tale, but it's well-written and smartly-structured.

The story has hooked me from the first page. Very engaging, writing that flows naturally and conveys a very deep sense of humanity. Fingers crossed that it continues this way, and for now there's nothing that would indicate otherwise. Just absolutely delightful. Even with some very heavy themes.

I keep waiting for this to get engaging. While the premise is interesting on its face (genuinely), and I love hard scifi... I've had more engaging reads browsing Wikipedia.

I'll see if I can "find the fun" somewhere in the remainder, but I'm worried I won't. Everything is very clinical & flat. In over 120 pages, only 1 character has had any real development, and it's part of an absurd/nonsensical spider plot.

Barely over 10 pages in, and the protagonist is insufferable. It's almost like the author is painting her as a very poor stereotype of an emotionless/robotic autistic person. As an actual autistic person, it's exhausting for me to read and see that kind of caricature. Surely that's not the case here?

Oh.

Oh, no.

Neoliberalism is often misunderstood through its utopian propaganda as an effort to shrink the state and free the natural operations of “the market.” But neoliberals redirect state efforts rather than diminish them.

So far, so good- writing flows, all cozy elements included. Tasty food, adorable cat, inexplicable funding sources, convenient housing.. Like wrapping yourself up and sipping tea while being a blanket burrito.

Rough trudging, still no decent characters to hold onto except the holdovers from the first book, and you barely get time with them. The rich environment that sold the last book is not at all recreated in regards to depth in this sequel. Barely 2/5 stars, if that. All questions, no answers.

Definitely not as engaging or cohesive as the first book in the series. Jumping between so many characters that I've not been given reason to care about or empathize. So far, exhausting.

Cybernetically and genetically altered, living in the most alien environment while still being on Earth-- what kind of humans would you expect to be selected for such a high-risk/pilot program without ethical constraints? The seafloor environment sounds beautifully fascinating despite its regular grotesqueries, thought.
