i hate this fkin book why am i reading it

the sexual tension between the fmc and qin zheng needs to be investigated. i don’t think they’re supposed to have a romantic arc but i’d be surprised if they do. i hate both of them anyways.

what a boring chore to read. i hate that i am incapable of dnf-ing books. but to have a complete view of life, one must consume both good and bad art. a stretch to call this book art, though. ughhhhhh. it's so conflicting to like an author and not like their work -_-

this book pisses me off so bad. the maid is such a shamelessly blatant plot device for woke politics like— listen. i'm not one of those people who get mad that a book is too "woke" coz that's a right-wing pet-peeve. but holy fuck this book takes modern american leftist tiktok politics and puts it in this alt-historical chinese setting with utmost seriousness and it's so jarring and just plain awful writing.

yk it's refreshing to see a couple who have real conflicts and disagreements and be able to call each other out and talk about it without imploding their relationship. they don't say the right thing all the time. it is shown very well in how ben and rafe differ in terms of class and privilege and also how rafe can be so blasé, almost ignorant, about things that have influence on ben's lived experience.
