‘Shatterday’, ‘Pretty Maggie Moneyeyes’, ‘Mefisto in Onyx’ - all three involve hopping around consciousnesses, all three are stories that have aged poorly, but which are propelled by the frantic energy of the author, unbothered about who he’ll piss off.

‘Repent Harlequin’ and ‘I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream’ are the first two stories here, front loaded like a Greatest Hits; I hadn’t even heard of anything beyond that so, 25% in, I’m in an unknown landscape being exposed to an endless parade of horrors, my only company an indifferent narrator uninterested in offering hope or mercy. Which, y’know…
