one of those books where the little horrors of everyday and human emotions are written in this mundane yet vivid way. Think of The Vegetarian or Breasts and Eggs or The Far Field

A page turner for sure, just like every other Kristin Hannah !! In a year deep into learning of stories of Vietnam, this one is an interesting complement through the eyes of Frankie, whose background is so foreign to the war and yet so intertwined by her choices

There’s something so warm about watching this wise, ineffable fae king fall irrevocably in love with this small human baby and know that this is his child and simply scoop him up and go forth, consequences be damned.

It’s my first vampire book since I read The Italian and never finished Twilight. For once I’m enjoying that vampires are given traits beyond immortality and bloodlust. More than that, I’m enjoying the familiar but engaging world structure and inter-race politics. The characters also actually have personalities and depth beyond their powers. So positive so far!

There’s a lot I’m enjoying as I read this so many turns of phrase that sit bittersweet and settling in the mouth like tea, and I feel compelled to particularly record the line: “But it was strange how shame was something you never became united to: each turn hurt just as much as the first.” On page 132, she grasped a shard of my heart and drew its every facet.

The tone of this book is so very engaging and yet eerie in its incisive descriptions of follies and feelings.

It’s been on my tbr for so long, practically since its release. But I grabbed it to kill time in a B&N and lo and behold the way it entranced me in 30 pages had me buying it and reading it while waiting in the lobby of a melting pot for our reservation!!! I resonate so much with how fallibly welcoming these characters and their dynamics are after my holidays filled with family.

I started this book 11 months ago, and David’s story was so vivid and resonant with me that I picked it back up in the middle of a page yesterday and was thrown right back in. He’s honest in his storytelling, firm in his self-deprecation, humorous in his delivery, and poignant in his descriptions. And I am enthralled. Here’s to my next time with David. And Maggie. On whose Durham couch I only read this.

This book makes every ounce of my heart come alive and feel such affection for Rajiv with such deep sympathy for his difficulties. He also challenges me a lot because I am part of the upper caste direct Indian heritage communities that are brutally cruel to people like Rajiv’s family. Obviously I don’t do so but I know how strong it is and present it is even in my own family and friend circles.

Truly, as lovely as I’ve told myself it would be. I’m glad this Book Loft day I finally made time for it. Fittingly, on my day of great rest and rejuvenation.

Such a small bound essay, but it captures me on the bottom rack of the bestsellers and top bookseller picks in the central room of the Book Loft, making me read it even as I wove between other patrons around that island shelf, eventually tucking into a corner with Julia.

I’m not sure if I’ll like it or not, and not even the first chapter can tell me. But I’m intrigued enough to try, surrounded by even the Jasmine Guillory and Lisa Kleypas and Talia Hibbert and Ali Hazelwood I would usually reach for in the romance section of the Book Loft.

I knew this one would rend me grief-stricken like The Buddha In The Attic did. I’ll have to stop here or I’ll be a sobbing wreck on the floor of the Book Loft between the Westerns and the plays.
