Mani is starting The Sense of Style: The Thinking Person's Guide to Writing in the 21st Century
Starting back at the beginning of this one.

I’m a big fan of Pinker’s way of Thinking and this book reminded me that the purpose of style is to provide the reader with the best experience.

Good information but I don't feel as if I'm getting the depth of coverage that I need to make statistics stick in my brain. I think it's gonna take hella practice problems like back in college.
That being said, this book does a great job of walking you through data analysis from the point of view of a consultant walking into a specific business problem.
I may come back and contradict myself. So far..meh.

I am enjoying the universe in here and the wordplay more than Anathem. He does less of the obscure word-blending abstraction than Anathem and the characters are more pleasant to imagine. Lots of fun so far.

Tolle jumps right beyond the academic gum clapping and psychobabble to useful metaphors of consciousness, schema behaviors, projection, shadow functions, identification... I could go on but I'm only on chapter 3 abd I am eager to get back to reading. See ya!

Mani is reading Louder Than Words: The New Science of How the Mind Makes Meaning
This one's worth the read if you want to step through the studies of embodied cognition and simulation and ho people make meaning of perceived events. It may not be helpful without some cognitive science background and interest because he steps through lots of studies and deconstructs the possible multiple interpretations of the studies and the subsequent confirming or NOT studies.

REally impressed with this book. It happens to be written by a psychologist who does a lot of research writing about self awareness and cognition and motivation. This brings the added bonus of using examples that include stuff I had not thought of or needed to review.

Going to come back to this later since the level of abstraction is not pragmatic for the models I'm conceptualizing right now. Great coverage of cognitive neurodynamics on a neuron to even cognitive cycles level but not what I need right now. Back later

Yeah! This one's going to take a second listen. Later...and well rested. Wow! A lot of the concepts like inflation and multiverse theories are well addressed here I just need to go back and polish my math and do another lap. There's a fascinating parallel between information in space and information in mindbrain being built here as well.

*Beautiful connection between the visual system, sustained attention, and conscious reasoning made within minutes of starting Robert Greene's "Mastery"* He also makes an excellent point about animals being trapped in a perpetual present, essentially controlled by the here and now. The human ability to mentally time travel is the pivotal evolutionary difference. I betcha this book ends up being about mindfulness.

*Beautiful definition of "bullshit" in Anathema!*. I must go back and parse it out later as it does a master job of demonstrating the technique of abstraction and recontextualization I'm trying to pull off for #postcardsfromdistorpia as explained in Surfaces and Essences by Hofstadter. #biosemiotics

2 hours of 33 into it. This far part brain-scramble, part semiotic word salad. Entirely brilliant in the way it's shaking my etch-a-sketch especially on the tail-winds of Surfaces and Essence and before that Dennett's Intuition Pumps. It takes Hofstadter's style of wordplay to a delicious level when you think about the effect of this rapid round of neologisms. #biosemiotics #socialpresence Ping to +John Kellden

Dennet does something awesome in the closing 5 minutes of part 1! After explaining his perspective on the role of DNA he slips in an embedded example via metaphor! Referring to a previous work by Dawkins he says the following: "I'll pass on the original form unmutated instead of making my own adjustments and sacrificing clarity for originality."

4 hours in and Hofstadter has done a twisted thing by connecting nouns and verbs as a neurological analogy by virtue of simultaneity of sensory experience. We're gonna need a bigger boat!

I knew I was in trouble when, after two hours and twenty minutes, the narrator announced,"prologue". I expect that by hour thirteen I will be certifiably insane! Hofstadter is systematically reaching into my brain and jostling every meme into a state of dizzy confusion.

"Sweet Baby Jesus, why do I want to kill him in his sleep?" or "How to Turn a Ho-ho-Ho( Merry Christmas) Into a Housewife" would have also been good titles too. No offense to anyone who I upset by throwing up the bat signal 3 times. False alarm, Gotham is safe. It's a book about why and how we push each other's buttons in love It's based on a century of attachment science vs Dr Ruth's mysterious past.

This one comes out the gates roaring with data about the neurophysiology of love, human relationships, and thought and behavior in dyads. This kind of information about how we regulate each other's physiology in relationships, though contrary to the pervading mindset of adult independence, should be known by anyone building or repairing a relationship.

Delicious so far. This is NOT a light read. The core focus is communication in the brain across the various modules using local and long distance signals. Along the way he covers some serious neuroscience history and how the interneurons (including basket cells work). This one's an eye-opener if you want to understand nuts and bolts of how your brain is sending information around and keeping you alive.

Sooo much repeat! I think I'll have to hold off and review this one after I have finished. It's transcribed from her seminars and the data is there but so far, despite many compliments about this book, all I hear is her trying to hypnotize me into buying stuff. Oh I bought The Genie in Your Genes because of her so I guess her skillz are legit! Either way- I had to take a break.

Good information but 2 things- 1 dude's ego is...wow! I read this in other reviews but figured I'd give it a shot. I can't help but to picture dude juggling his own n...ego through the whole thing. Thing 2 is that Bandler knows his stuff and every NLP book after him slips in his stuff so reading this after Intro to NLP or Integrative Hypnosis or The Game and others sounds like he's copying them. Read first!
