Amy C is starting The Sand Fish: An Atmospheric Middle Eastern Story of Rebellion in 1950s Dubai Culture
I’m doing a reading the world challenge and this is one of the best I’ve read. Full of cultural and religious references, this book has a good story and is thought provoking.

Amy C is starting A King's Ransom (Plantagenets #5; Richard the Lionheart #2)
I have spent a significant amount of time with the plantagenants. This fifth book describes the captivity of Richard the Lionheart and spoiler, his attempt to get his kingdom back. Ms Penman’s historical characters are brought to life and made me wish I could talk with them. My only regret is that she didn’t continue her series with John but then again that would be a depressing book.

Loved the discussion of being a parent and what that means to other sapients. As someone who sees people become parents everyday who probably shouldn’t be, I appreciated Pei’s experience.

Psychological thriller, I liked the perspective of the main character going through therapy. Despite all the trauma in her life, you know she survives because she’s now in therapy!

A cafe that has a chair where if you sit in it, you can go back in time. Only to that cafe and only till the coffee gets cold. Kawaguchi weaves the lives of four people from the cafe and their stories as to why they wish to go to the past. Wonderful!

Amy C is starting Before the Ever After
I listened to this short book On audio and while the subject matter disturbed me, especially the fact that the narrator was a young boy, I found my mind wandering. Zech’s football playing dad, has all the symptoms of what later will be called Traumatic Brain encephalopathy but back in the 90s it was not understood, and the people who suffer from it, were often shamed.

Well written, and because it’s a YA book, the horrid details are not expounded. Enchanted wants to be a singer and Korey Fields says he will help. He slowly becomes an abuser and Enchanted is too scared to leave.

Amy C is starting Dear Justyce (Dear Martin, #2)
Justyce and Quan are from the same neighborhood, both have dads who aren’t very involved but Quan
Has added burdens that Justyce doesn’t and every time he turns around life just doesn’t work out. Similar theme to the hate you give, this book had memorable characters but a bit too neatly tied up ending.

Amy C is starting With the Fire on High
Teenage mother and grandmother on disability often leads to broken dreams and heartache. Not in this novel by Elizabeth Acevedo. This book takes place during Emoni’s senior year and she not only is an exceptional mother but balances a part time job, very difficult paternal grandmother and school. The food made me hungry and wish I was a better cook.

Amy C is starting Ready Player Two (Ready Player One, #2)
Ready Player one, was unique in that it took place in the future but took the hunt for the Easter Eggs from
The 1980s past. Ready Player two has some of the fun of the first book but takes place completely in the future. This novel is decidedly more series, as it explores themes like AI, space travel, real world verses virtual world and destruction of the planet. Well done.
