Considering both books are set in the same town (Thalia) and were published only a year apart, “Leaving Cheyenne” is surprisingly different from “Horseman, Pass By.” I saw a lot of Call and Gus in Gid and Johnny (or is it the other way around?), and overall, this story felt more like a McMurtry story than the first book did; but I can’t decide which I liked more.

Made it through the first book in this trilogy (Horseman, Pass By), and I thought it was great! A simple story with a profoundly touching ending. To me, early McMurtry is very similar to “Lonesome Dove” McMurtry, just less funny and a bit more self-serious, but still very good! Also, these stories are set in more modern times, which gives them a very different feel from the “Lonesome Dove” books.

listening to this while driving I-40 heading west is just delightful.
