barskova writes in the beginning, "a traveler chooses to see." this book has been sitting on my desk for months. I did not expect to be immediately confronted by vivid evocations of the Leningrad blockade-- a blot in time I was unaware of until I read the first short story, "Eastrangement" and unwittingly became the kind of traveler Polina became: to see the ghosts hidden in St. Petersburg through their own eyes.
