I'm missing emotional depth, for something to not be spelled out for me, for character growth beyond memory recovery. Also dialogue that doesn't sound like it's straight out of a mediocre sitcom. All of that is jarring with the flow, and an interest in science can only do so much to make me enjoy a read.

I think I haven't been this annoyed/frustrated with a book since reading Surfacing and No Longer Human, and back then it was about an annoying character or bad pacing, but the writing itself, the style was good. With this one it's just the same structure, the same rhetorical devices, the same shallow humor over and over again.

Like, the science is alright, but other than that this is so frustrating.

Is the great and funny writing in the room with us? Glad I only paid 10€ for this, cause so far I'm really not a fan. Cheap jokes and bad style.

There are so many sentences. And they are all about this long. No, more like this. Ah yes. This is the right length. I wonder if this will continue throughout the book. I might not like that. And why are his jokes not funny? They should be funny. Let there be fewer sentences. Let there be more commas.

The Heraclids - family of killing people accidentally.

Apparently, Heracles' solution to most any obstacle, i.e. mostly random dudes, is "to kill them also" (recurring phrase right there!). The matter-of-fact style of the Library is making this somewhat darkly hilarious tbh.

I think so far one of the most common thoughts I had reading Heracles' later story would have to be "what a dick"

It's quite exhausting to read what with all the names and genealogies and notes but also sort of fun to finally read some original(ish) Greek mythology. It lets you discover quite some etymological trivia.
