“The reason people become so deferential towards prestigious people is that they are motivated to get close to prestigious people in order to maximize their own learning and raise their own prestige by association.. Prestigious people in turn will allow some supplicants to get close to them because having a group of followers is reliable signal in the community of their high standing and prestige.”

I am fascinated. This book is going to take some pondering, so I’m marking the pages that have bold statements to which I’d like to reflect back.
this page reflects that everything may seem broken now, but that has always been true even in the 1970s in the 1930s the difference being it’s been blasted out on phones with emotions shared all over the place.

I’ll still be OK I’ll say it again loving you, but I haven’t abandoned myself for you. I cannot be faithful to you without being faithful to myself I reclaimed my future.

Each college admissions model is derived, at least in part from the U.S. News model, and each one is a mini-WMD. These models lead students and their parents to run frantic circles and spend obscene amounts of money. And they’re opaque.

The victims are the vast majority of Americans, poor and middle-class families. It tilts against the needy students, -pushing them down a path toward poverty.

I am very interested in the topics of this book. I have often wondered what happened between my generation (graduated high school in 1990) and my children’s generation (high school grads in 2015 and 2017) that changed the cost of college so much that a public school teacher and machinist could barely scrape by to send a couple kids to college. The chapter, Arms Race, sure helps explain!

I’ve only read the prologue but this book may either creep me out or make me very angry/anguished.

“But surely, You’re not comparing our children to theirs?” asked lucky, “One look tells you ours are a superior breed.”
“ One look tells you ours have had more food, nicer clothing, and better dental care,” said Dean Highbottom. “ Assuming anything more, a physical, mental, or especially a moral superiority, would be a mistake. That sort of hubris almost finished us off in the war.”

Just read the most amazing chapter in this book: 8, entitled The Great Sin. Pride or the desire to be better than others at anything does become the root of opposite of what God desires for us. Lewis explains his view of what pride is, does and what it isn’t. One of those passages you wish you could commit to memory and take with you always.

True fact: “When there’s a baby in the house, time stretches and contracts, abiding by none of the regular rules. A single day can feel endless, and then suddenly six months have blown right past.”

Amazed at how the verses and words apply to my life from time to time. Thinking I should get a few of the Max Lucado books that are quoted.
