Pausing my read of this. My eARC does not include illustrations, and it's painfully clear that I'm not experiencing the book as it is meant to be.

I reached out to Tor, hopefully they'll get me the illustrations in some form soon.

Enjoying it so far, as far as I can.

So it turns out the movie covered the first half of the book. The second half is shaping up to be "Bastian is a little shit"

This is either the perfect time or the worst time to read a series based on the theme of long term consequences arising from decisions made as a kid

My mental image of vampires, I'm discovering as I read this, is equal parts Mavra from the Dresden Files and Leslie Nielsen from the Mel Brooks movie Dracula: Dead and Loving It. This is ... confusing

I can't decide whether reading this in hot, humid August (as opposed to while stuck inside during a January blizzard) is a great idea, or a terrible one. It's 90°F outside and it's still making me shiver.

I can't decide if this is a book, an acid trip, a book about an acid trip, or an acid trip about a book. Or all of the above.

That sinking feeling when everything is going great, you're excited for a satisfying climax of a book, and realize you're only halfway through...

Before trying out Joe Abercrombie, apply the Tarantino Test. Think of scenes from your favorite Tarantino film along the lines of the Bride fighting the Crazy 88 or Marvin getting shot in the face. Did you find them gut-bustingly hilarious? Then Abercrombie is perfect for you.

That reunion was everything I could have hoped for.

I never would have guessed it, but apparently the answer to the question "What is missing from my life?" is "Ragnar Chuck Norris jokes."

I know I'm reading a GGK book when I spend an hour on Wikipedia learning about a place and period of history I was previously ignorant of - in this case, Tang Dynasty China

Finished part 1. Great so far; only complaint is that Brandon's tendency to exaggerate characters almost to the point of caricature is on full display with Dalinar's flashbacks. I can't see them as the same person at this point. But on the whole: this is awesome.

I just laughed out loud because a man got his skull smashed against a stone floor. Something is deeply wrong with either Joe Abercrombie or myself.

This went from "dark and disturbing" to "dark, disturbing, and really fucking funny" when I wasn't paying attention. I feel like Joe Abercrombie would get along great with the Comedian from Watchmen. They both get the joke.

Every Connie Willis book I've ever read has a character that really wants to talk to the protagonists, whom they really want to avoid (to the point of hiding when they hear them coming), and is completely incapable of reading social cues telling them to go away. I was going to ding her for that, until I realized I've always had someone or other like that in my life since the 7th grade.

"But you have to stay absolutely cool. I may be completely off-base, and panicking prematurely."

"I don't think so. I think you're panicking post-maturely. In fact, if you were panicking any later it would be practically posthumously. I've been panicking for days."

Of course the 6th word in this book is "latte."

Reminding me really strongly of Robin McKinley. This is a good thing.
