I learned something about starlings from reading this book. Mozart’s starling is given its own chapter. The rest of the book is about raising her own baby starling. It’s well observed but reads more like a manual or notebook than a history since little is actually known about Mozart’s bird.

How’s this book? Almost better the second time through!

Love the way Balzac (forbidden) is woven into this story of two city boys being “re-educated” by peasants in the remote mountains of western China.

So glad the narrator is Australian.

So far, the only ordeal is swallowing the plot line.

Kind of a sappy mashup so far of Tom Joad & Tim Sawyer w/ a little bit of Jack Kerouac thrown in… but Towles is a fine writer, so we are willing to ride along on this road trip to CA via NY🛣📕🛻

usually Reese is a pretty good barometer but so far I’m a little underwhelmed😴

Her argument that history, which prides itself on being objective & factual, has been distorted by a failure to account for half of humanity is a ‘fact’ worth knowing. This failure has led to “gaps in the data.” And this gender data gap has significant consequences for women as we navigate this world “constructed on male data.”

Not very convincing 🔙🐇🔜
