This is much better than I expected. I’ve had it sitting in my shelf for so long because I wasn’t a big fan of a few of her other stories but preemptively bought this because of the hype. So far, I definitely understand the hype surrounding this book.

“This is a love story and it is better, by far, than any of the ones I have dreamed up in the past. If I’m allowed a wish, just one, then it is this: I wish for our story to have a happy ending”

I think this book is going to ruin me.

Slow start but also I think I’m in a bit of a reading rut and had some migraine episodes that have been disrupting my sleep and reading schedule.

However it’s slowly picking up and I experienced my first tear. Let’s see how this goes

I’ve just started and already I’m so intellectually stimulated - I feel like I’m in a lit class needing to take notes.

So far I’m thinking about language as power. Translation as control. The way empire institutionalizes knowledge. The costs of assimilation.

I just finished part 1. Wow. The physical, emotional, and vocal reactions I am having - I’m not sure I have experienced something as intense with a book before. And I just read The Nightingale.

I’m angry about Vietnam, which makes me angry about the world today.

And utterly heartbroken in some many different ways.

I’m already crying.
