Okay, I don't get the theythem character. The way society seems to work in this world, nobody has time for gender navel gazing and no gender roles seem to exist. Are these some sort of sexless clones? Not sure what kind of modern procreation is happening. Also, the theythem is referred to as "he" sometimes, so maybe it was changed last minute and edited sloppily.

Oh how I already absolutely hate this. Lack of punctuation (so far only quotation marks, but will get worse) - only marginally better than Prophet Song (other Booker Price nominee from Ireland that year who also had no concept of orthography), fucking annoying characters descending into bullshit nihilism and despair and bu-uh-uh, nobody can fucking communicate, just fucking kill yourself, why should I care.

I thought my ebook file was faulty because I was assaulted by a wall of text without any paragraphs and quotation marks on EVERY PAGE. Almost as bad as Becky Chambers, but not quite. I also need a content warning for gender nonsense. Is this some alien race without sexual dimorphism so you can only tell men from women based on whatever trinkets they fancy? And of course "nonbinary" has to be a thing as well. Completely nonsensical.

I really was trying but then INSERT SPOILERS happened and not even for any reason that added something to the story - at least as far as I could tell. I will still finish it because I'm already half-way but can't see it redeem itself over 2 stars.
