I got really near the end of the book - don’t want to put in spoilers but there is a ‘nooooo!’ moment where I stopped.

It’s a really unusual book - you don’t know who are the ‘goodies’ and who ‘baddies’: the two unlikely heroines of the story? the nemesis?

Girls are doing it for themselves, at a time when they didn’t- or were just starting to.

It would be a good, if odd film.

I’m so disappointed. A memory of my kids’ childhood, watching the film and loving it. Tolkien it isn’t. As another reviewer says- it’s something in the language. Not simply the wordiness (I can happily read Dickens) but some gloomy feel about the book. Maybe it just doesn’t suit my mood at present! I’m flicking through as I’m writing this and the tone doesn’t seem to change much. Ah well…

I’m out of the Stone Age and the hunter gatherers, now into the birth of city states, and the time of the floods.

(There wasn’t just one - who knew? 😊)

I was hesitant to start this - expecting rampant cruelty. It is so much more subtle than that, evoking real people, not ‘just’ victims.

Not enjoying it very much. It’s a skillfully observed, well written but rather negative view of the modern world and the position of women in it. Written with an eye to the TV market.

I left it on the plane (gnash). I’m hoping to see a copy in the Oxfam book shop and finish it. Trouble is I’ll probably have to start again and ‘enjoy’ the company of these perfectly appalling people and the dreadful things they do.. If elite India is even remotely like this (and it probably is), it accounts for a lot...

Finding this quite dull...maybe it's the translation? However, reading the mostly positive reviews has inspired me to have another try..

I loved the Rotters Club and my son suggested I read this one. I'm a slow reader but I'm eating this up. I do love books about the time I've lived through (e.g. the Adrian Mole books) and this looks like being a goodie.
