I'm so excited to read this and so thrilled that it exists. I did some page flipping and index perusal and map studying before I started a proper read, and there's so much here that's history as I know it as a Texan that makes me happy to see acknowledged.

"One of our mother's Dresden figurines is broken, I thought, and I said aloud to Constance, 'I am going to put death in all their food and watch them die.'"

MERRICAT IS SO INSANE AND I LOVE HER. Bless her crazy little poisonous heart.

"I wish you were all dead, I thought, and longed to say it out loud."

Merricat Blackwood is such a snob and antisocial little hater and my god, I think I adore her.

"In the weeks after Peter's death, wondering about some child somewhere called Esme, Hortensia came to the realisation that the quality of her life would have benefited greatly from more anger and less resentment. Resentment was different from anger. Anger was like a dragon, burning other things. Resentment burned a hole in your stomach, burned your insides."

YES. Such a mood!

"Emergency is not an ignoble condition: it may even be the state of mind in which every postcolonial people has to live."

Great line from the preface.
