JD Vance should be ashamed of himself. He really doesn't understand as much about his hillbilly roots as he believes he does. More on this soon.

My progress has not progressed. this book, which appears to have the utmost of best intentions, is a slog. One has to be in the right frame of mind (and in my case, highly caffeinated) to be able to read this for any length of time. I think I might like it better if I purchased the audiobook.

Eye-opening, that's for sure.

I've been skipping around in this, but it's great. I appreciate her direct, clear style with just enough details for one to understand her, publishing in the '90s, the job of editing, and her relationship with Wallace. She sheds more light on Wallace's character than T.D. Max does in his Wallace bio. I'm sure it took time to process what happened in that relationship, and to see that it really was him, not her.

this book consumes the reader while the reader consumes it. Annular, solipsistic, ONANian.

This book is crazy--in a good way. Chock full of every narrative style. More acronyms than a govt agency. Yet so grounded that I am not clucking my tongue, thinking"I hate reading about rich people's problems." Nobody seems economically rich. But certainly rich in the life experience category. Also, I find I don't need to read most of the footnotes because I already get it. Except the footnote on Himself's films

While I enjoy May on the one hand, on the other some of his observations are dated and rather bigoted. He voices concerns over other "races" taking over our American culture. Rather than seeing other ethnic groups as adding to the culture, May saw them as destructive. This comes from the conqueror paradigm, where conquered cultures were lost. That's where I bogged down with the book and haven't picked it up since.
