Woah! I never do updates before I finish reading but I had to say how amazing this book is already (200-odd of 700-odd in). Oates' command of language is amazing, she holds every scene in the palm of her hand. I can't even explain how she just twists on a dime so that you're seeing the same moment, the same scene, in so many different frames, but without a seam. I am savouring this book; I do not want it to end.

Wow. This book is immense. Anybody who loves that sweet spot where historical fiction and great literary writing meet -- particularly anyone who has any connection to or love for Ireland and its history -- should read this.

29 pages in and this already reeks of class. One of those books you know that each chapter will be worthwhile in its own right, even without the whole that they go to make up.

This book is outstanding. Just outstanding. I surfed to this via a link from having loved Hard Rain Falling by Don Carpenter, and the link was a rock-solid one. Beautifully simple and understated style, perfectly real and identifiable characters who my heart is in my mouth for.

This book is beautiful. Like a fable, timeless and haunting. I'm blown away by this writing.
