It's picking up. Now we're learning about Gwendolyn's "origin story", so to say.

The plot is becoming clearer now. While I struggled for the first 30% of the book, I am now interested in what happens next. From the onset we know it doesn't end well for Leo but how??

Absolutely bonkers so far. Hazy, fluid, meandering but interesting.

The ascent has started and already the path to Nuristan is full of adventures.
I liked Eric Newby's writing. His self-deprecation, wry humor, and descriptions of an Afghanistan--now largely lost and inaccessible to most of the world--spins a charming story.
I can see a lot of similarities with Bryson's a A Walk in the Woods, another excellent read.

So far I'm loving the setting. A group of 80-years old trying to solve crime.
Also, I love how confident almost all of them are.

The chapter on the wheelwright was beautiful. So much precision and such planning.

Imagine picking out a tree years in advance and the patience needed to see it grow to the right size before you used it.

The descriptions of the war were riveting.

The setting is grim. Evokes a picture of a dilapidated town barely holding on to its crumbling lifeline.
There is a sense of subtle or perhaps suppressed hostility against Mrs. Green.
