Really enjoying this so far. Meticulously researched

Remarks on Syrian Regime haven't aged well. Remarks on Afghanistan rather prescient and sobering. Wondering to what extent authors will address (inevitable?) backlash to top-down solutions

This book is trying soooooooo hard to be poetic. It's really getting on my nerves. It seems designed to be incredibly quotable, but the quotes themselves don't really fit in the context and are getting distracting

"Ignorance was just as dynamic as knowledge and it grew in the same proportion."

Reference to Marion Sims - I'm not sure I'm loving that the main character is named after someone who brutalized enslaved women's bodies.

The way the narrator pronounced La Jolla was so cringy
