No one told me how funny this book is lol. Here I was thinking it was all horrific and disgusting when in reality it’s absurdist and satirical. Makes it even more confusing to me that people make the argument that this book glorifies pedophilia.

It’s a simplistic book, but helpful for someone like myself with only a cursory understanding of economics and AI to get a better feel for these topics.

I find the book to be disjointed, redundant, and as another reviewer said, “desperately in need of an editor.” It’s a shame because the ideas within are powerful, but it’s hard to really parse how they tie together, or what the big picture of these ideas as a cohesive ideology are as they currently stand in the book.

While I'm enjoying my read through, if you are already someone who spends a lot of time thinking about language and rhetoric, this book likely won't teach you anything new. I found the chapters on Scientology fascinating as I don't know much about it, but otherwise Cultish is a survey level approach to the world of cults and language.

I can’t begin to weigh how many pounds of air I’ve had stolen from my lungs by people who love me but don’t care to know why. Or hate and have the problem of understanding why......you’ve gotta try to love things, even if they just want to eat your heart while you sit there watching them do it, coerced, dying laughing.
