Sometimes you start a book that makes you want to go back and rate everything one star lower because it's already totally obliterated everything else you've ever read. Called my mom within 10 pages to tell her she had to read this with me.

Incredible how often I pick up a nonfiction book based on the author's experience doing something cool and hard and pro-social and then she's a lesbian... We just keep winning....

Okay trying to be open and not defensive but starting with explicit blood libel is a strong choice

Admittedly I picked this up primarily for the cover, but I'm immediately in love with the pseudo-Renaissance Italy setting and the newspaper room plot

The white guy's a libertarian right up until it's time to be racist about Native Americans. Government interference is okay if it's about eugenics and cultural destruction

Edward Abbey writes about nature the way a noir detective talks about a femme fatale and unfortunately, due to the way I am, I am absolutely loving this despite Abbey having the most rancid misogynist vibes

Choosing to say of Hamas "[they] negotiate with humanitarian agencies, discourses, and law, as well as engaging in humanitarian work themselves" and nothing else is really a choice.

Rachel is on page 237 of 320 of Bones Would Rain from the Sky: Deepening Our Relationships with Dogs
When I took my first dog through obedience training, my trainers told me that if dog training advice was older than ten years I should ignore it, because the understanding changes so quickly. Reading this book, published in 2002, I understand that better. Clothier spends so much time just begging her readers not to abuse their dogs in the name of training.

You know, I fancy I know slightly more than the average person about kuru but this book is the first time I've heard about Gajdusek being a pedophile and you know what? I get why other accounts have left that out.

Just stop being weird about women!!! Stop!!! Treat women with the same professional courtesy you treat men!!! I hate this!!! Stop identifying professional women you worked with by their husbands!!!

Sometimes I catch myself thinking "shut uuuuuuuup" when Maples gets too self aggrandizing and that's not a good thought to have while reading!! I'm so damn close tho, he's not going to beat me
