How far we have traveled from the times up until the sixties when ethnicities fought to get their share of political power. So many of these folks are now ‘white’ and no longer grounded by their culture, language, religion. It’s not that politics was pretty in these years but it was about bread and butter not inflammatory identity issues.

This book talks about terminal patients having ‘hope’ as a cure-all which can be harmful. But the problem isn’t hope, It’s that people cling to a belief that they won’t have to face death. If they direct their hope to experiencing dying as a spiritual journey, that could be motivating and joyous. First, we need to stop fighting the reality of death. This is a monumental but important challenge.

I just noticed that the use of sidebars and footnotes only apply to pages 260-308. Why did he do this? Was it merely for absurdist reasons? Just as the text is largely though not completely obscure the footnotes and sidebars seems only partially related to the text referenced.
