Um hello, I did except this book to have the nonbinary/genderqueer/trans energy that it currently does?

One of the main characters of this book is Hard of Hearing/Deaf. Some of the rep is good (she can’t understand someone with their face turned away, answering the phone is unpleasant [it’s not connected to her hearing aids]), but the very first thing that happens is someone calls to her from downstairs and she hears their whole sentence. I’m not HoH, but this seemed very unrealistic.

So far I find this to be mostly charming, though I could do without the jokes about lynching, slavery, and the holocaust.

I love Shaun Tan’s work. This book, like “Tales from Outer Suburbia” is full of delightful surprises, beautiful illustrations, and empathy.

So far, so good. I like that the protagonist isn’t charming or good at talking to people. I really like the world building. I’m mostly wondering about the nature of fertility treatments in this future, and also queerness/straightness/marriage in the culture, especially as it relates to colonizing mars.

I don’t really like the Speculative Fiction parts of this book; it doesn’t gell with the rest of the book and it’s not that interesting.
I like the bits about Adam much more. But his life keeps getting worse. How is that possible? The homophobia is sad, but not surprising. The sexual harassment is really hard to listen to. More of Angela, please.

I’m reading this book for a Mock Printz Award (Program? Training? Simulation?) simulation. If I wasn’t going to discuss this book with other people, I would stop listening to it right now. Thoroughly dislike.

It’s really hard to listen to accounts of child abuse, fictional or otherwise. I do not like this book.
