The first chapter was so promising, real I Am Legend vibes then it just gets more and more nonsensical and a chore to read and doesn't feel at all English or folkloric. Don't want to give up but I can't see me finishing this without being furious about it

Out of my reading slump and spurred on by reading some reviews of this which said that people didn't really know what was going on and who was who until about 40% of the way in. I thought it was just me. I thought Marcus was her mum's partner (are we meant to or did I skim over an important part?). Anyway, coming up on 40% so let's crack on!

OK, same concept as True Crime Story by Joseph Knox then. Wasnt a fan of that, let's see if this fares better

Sort of enjoying this not really going anywhere and not really caring about anyone or how someone died.

Have wanted to read this for so long but having done some research, it doesn't even feel like much of what should be represented actually is. And anecdotal accounts I've read from residents elsewhere imploes that perhaps the author doesn't really have the right narrative in parts either. Disappointed so early on but might just have to leave my research until after I read books in future.

My first dnf of the year. The story seems great but I found that more than concentrating on that, I was constantly questioning the whiteness of the author in writing from the pov of Black people and it felt off. Will finish it in future perhaps.
