Lucia Rosati is starting The Complete Personal Memoirs of Ulysses S Grant
I never bail on a book, but the few tidbits of interesting information are too far apart. It’s to the the point when I see the book sitting there, I ponder for a moment and then say, “nah! Can’t do it. It’s not in me.” Therefore, I am retiring this book to the shelf!

—firedamp being the most deadly. The title Killing For Coal would make you expect a focused narrative on the labor struggles. Instead the author has broadened it into a history of all things coal. Haha.

I thought this book would be about labor unrest in Colorado mines but instead have been learning about every aspect of coal from formation to the types of people who worked in the mines. It is a seemingly endless book. Haha. But I seldom quit a book I am reading, so I continue on. I am learning about stinkdamp, blackdamp, afterdamp, and firedamp, which are dangerous conditions that occur in mines.

I am taking a hiatus from this book for now because it’s getting into later stages of grief and I’m not ready. It talks about new relationships. I can’t even go there so I will save it for when or if I ever want that.

Not quite half way but finally finished volume I. I think I’m finally back into my reading. This book is nearly 800 pages. Finally feel like I’m making progress.

Really interesting story of Alaska in Michener’s usual expansive style. It’s almost 900 pages so I have a ways to go.

Really interesting. It has forced me to view Madison and Jefferson in a more negative way, having always admired them both. I am also reminded that politics gets ugly. Some things never change.

A lot of technical military maneuvers along with the horrors. I had to take a break from this book.

Reading about Jim Crow atrocities makes me sick to my stomach, but I believe I have an obligation to know the stories.

A very in-depth story of the revolution. My goal is to finish it over my break. Fascinating and well-told.
