I’m a little confused at the premise but I’m getting the impression that women are essentially raised as cattle in this universe

Your mind is your bitch.

To think what you want to think is to think the truth, regardless of appearances.

Where you desire to be is the truth and if you fixate your mind on this truth, believe that it is real and already here, and take decisive action, it will manifest itself.

“Getting clear about what your unique purpose is can be the difference between living a happy, fulfilled life or living in the restrictive veal pen of your own indecision.”

I know you are but what am I?

How can you not care what others think and truly be yourself?

1. Ask yourself: “Why?”
2. Always do your best
3. Trust your intuition
4. Find a temporary role model
5. Love yourself

Outside opinions can be constructive, but ask yourself: “Is there truth to this?” If so, how can you do better? If not, choose to let it go.

This book is okay so far. I was not very interested to begin with but as mysteries are becoming more obvious and Bailey and Hannah’s relationship becomes more fleshed out, it’s pulling me in.

How to win yourself over:
1. Appreciate how special you are
2. Drown yourself in affirmations
3. Do things you love
4. Find a replacement
5. Ditch the self-deprecating humor
6. Let the love in
7. Don’t compare yourself to others
8. Forgive yourself
9. Love yourself

This is a lot to do! I might reread this tomorrow and the day after so I can cement these in my mind. #6 is about accepting compliments, that’s hard

“You are a badass. … It is who you are. It’s who you always will be. It’s not up for negotiation.”

I’ve heard this from Dr. John Delaney as well and while he states “choose reality”, it’s the same message. You find yourself feeling insecure or panicking, remind yourself what is - objectively, here and now. You need to believe you are amazing. It’s not optional. It’s necessary.

“Watching someone else totally go for it can be incredibly upsetting to the person who’s spent a lifetime building a solid case for why they themselves can’t.”

Ego or the Big Snooze (BS) will fight you when breaking out of your comfort zone (usually society based values). You have to remove the BS from your genuine desires and recognize that others are snoozing too when they feel you’re being reckless.

“If you are depressed, you are living in the past. If you are anxious, you are living in the future. If you are at peace, you’re living in the present.” - Loa Tzu

There wasn’t much for this chapter. But it was a good reminder that our mind often fights being in the present versus being elsewhere.

“This is about your faith being greater than your fear.”

You don’t have to believe in God but you will be much happier if you believe in something.

You have to think about what your subconscious mind believes. If you grew up being told you’ll be nothing, you will hesitate to take risks.

“Our conscious mind thinks it’s in control, but it isn’t. Our subconscious mind doesn’t think about anything, but is in control.“

I have now seen references where Miles says how bias and racial bias affects his life and I’m like “okay, that makes sense”. But I just read another part where Miles reflects that he was arrested because of the color of his skin BUT HE WAS AT A CRIME SCENE AND HAD THE SAME OUTFIT ON AS THE PERP!!! This specific example of racial discrimination makes no sense and feels sooo forced.

Still enjoying this though!

We’re three chapters into this book and Peter tells Miles that the officer made a mistake by thinking Miles was the perpetrator in the burglary. Miles is frustrated because he’s considered an automatic criminal because of his skin but this plot point comes out of NO WHERE. I have a bad feeling… Miles even admits he looks and is wearing the same clothes as the burglar… what?

ODYSSEUS APPEARANCE. Also I love Penolope’s character in retellings dude. I can’t wait to read the Penelopiad from Margaret Atwood. In the Odyssey she is portrayed as this crying, incessant woman but in retellings, she’s given more credit to be clever and cunning as well as beautiful.

Also Clytemnestra hates Menelaus and I don’t think it’s totally deserved. Agamemnon I get but not Menelaus. We’ll see
