An amazing read. Very well-written...though slow-going too. Really intimate look at life for migrant young women (from the countryside) in Dongguan, China...a bustling city of new factories.

Oddly, her writing brings to mind Javier Marias. Though very different, they share a precision in language, an exactitude, in which the sentence is the most compelling form...one sentence builds on another, building a case, an elegant trap, made finer and sturdier, so that the reader is soon enough enmeshed.

Osborne's writing routine (from 3/21/16 interview in Interview: "Since I live in a tropical climate, I work when the light has faded out—late at night is best for me. The koel birds are wailing, the cicadas and frogs keep me company, and the phone has stopped tormenting me with temptations. I start at about 10 pm and work through till 4 am with pots of incredibly expensive Chinese tea."
