This book is so very Catholic. It amazes me that a book all about the church, monks, prayer, etc, can succeed in not mentioning Jesus once. Truly, it saddens me that many Catholics have done a lot to shift focus from the redemption of Jesus our true Savior and only necessary mediator to mere rituals and outward holiness.

But I digress. The mystery was fine and it is a rather cozy murder mystery.

I’m only halfway through so far, and quickly losing interest. The plot is fast paced but there’s too much of that modern internal dialogue of “I killed all those people, I guess I had to, but it’s going to haunt me…” I mean, I get it, but it’s seemingly on every page and is getting tiresome. I’ll finish this one but who knows how much more endurance I have for this series.

Wow. I’m only 37% in and I love it. It’s so good. I think it helps that I lived in New England for almost 12 years and his imagery is spot on. But wow. A middle grade book that can touch on such a variety of deep issues in about 85 pages is quite impressive.
