really intrigued by this idea of private vs public life disappearing with younger generations who think everything should be public especially wrt the treatment of celebrities but that’s not what this book is about

Definitely picked the best time to finally read this book, huh.

there has to be a better word to repeatedly use to describe an anxious feeling other than “niggle”

booktok suggested the audiobook version of this bc Joshua Jackson narrates the male pov and he’s the only reason I’ve made it this far. (that and pretending it’s a Charlie Conway romcom spin off, so sorry 2 u, Pacey Witter.)

Idk it’s just kinda hard to feel sorry for this woman who *volunteered* for war, was surprised to learn war was nothing but useless death and violence, is mad no one is praising her for her choice to not only go but also re-up, is self victimizing for “losing [her] youth” before she was “out of [her] 20s” and also making it a point to describe in detail every period specific outfit she and her friends wear.

“Ooh look at me, I’m in a nurse in the Vietnam war and every man is in looooooooove with me.”

I’m trying not to roll my eyes at the juxtaposition of the main character putting up a picture of the (dead) (married) man who she was (apparently) in love with (although there was absolutely nothing in the 4 chapters that established these feelings beyond the fact that he was the only man she interacted with) compared to her (token black) best friend putting up anti war pictures of her (token black) heroes.
