So far it mostly is a short history of rich, white dudes dabbling in science in the 19th and 20th century.

I've been reading a lot of fantasy short stories magazines & anthologies lately. This one obviously being the most old school so far.

Including a font size you could read from space. Do they think all their readers suffer from age induced farsightedness?

Getting flashbacks to reading 'The First Two Lives of Lukas-Kasha', which IMO is the better version of this story.
Still, as a teen I would have greatly enjoyed this.

One nitpick: in an alternate Europe/Middle East using the term Greek Fire feels weird.

Pretty fun so far, but if one more character uses the expression 'Jesus wept' one more time...

So far a decent Jack Vance pastiche, very reminiscent of the Cugel books. Less witty dialogs though.

While a decent primer to some of the most important Machine Learning concepts, the tone of voice is not really for me.

Starting a re-read of this classic.

So far, a bit too on the optimistic, rose-colored glasses side for me.
