I have no links on the website but just an update fro myself. I am reading 'The Comedy of Errors'. With that read, I will have read all of Shakespeare's plays. This is something that I had wanted to do fr a long time. I learned a lot about Shakespeare and his times. I also learned a lot about literary criticism by reading the notes and the essays provided within the Folger editions. T

So far, this book reads like a bad television comedy. I hope that it gets better. I cared about the characters in "Jude the Obscure", The Mayor of Casterbridge" and "The return of the Native". The characters in this novel do not have any real life to them. I'll keep trying but this novel is a burden to read.

I am glad that I read "Babbitt" and "Main Street" before this novel. The novel feels like a mixture of the two and with that very contrived. The characters do not feel real.

I'm reading Arrowsmith and having a difficult time getting into it. it is back in Zenith again. I liked Babbitt very much. I liked Main Street and Elmer Gantry. The characters in Arrowsmith seem to formulaic now. i ahve to give it more time

Cohen's writing has an unapologetic sense of place. Reading this novel, I sense the country in which I grew up. Things can happen here. This place matters. Everything does not ahve to happen somewhere important - somewhere else

One of the major features of this novel is its wordplay. I've seen a few plays on words but not very much. Some of them were quite funny I suppose that most of them could ahve been lost in the translation from German
This is supposed to be a classic novel but so far I have not seen very much insight. I have read much better novels. It appears to be trying very hard to be shocking and maybe it was 50 or 60 years ago.
