Names were also powerful, and if one was always calling someone’s name in their heart, after a long time, that person would know and they would be moved.

Something like I’ll-fated affinity could be compared to getting shat on by a bird when going out the door. You could think up every possible way to circumvent it and wrack your skull for how to guard against it, but there would always be that bird flying in from nowhere like a suddenly-ambushing army, and it would nevertheless still clearly identify your head and land a lump of divine crap on it sooner or later.

Struggling a bit with the necessity of the ‘vocabulary lesson’ here. Awkward placement. Awkward choice for...what?... establishing his father’s personality? *shrug*

Finished “Dread,” first of the short stories, and find my reaction is mediocre. If a story is an action this is a shoulder shrug. It didn’t grip me at all. Think I’ll hop into something else before jumping into “Hell’s Event.”

The story “Whatever Happened?” broke my heart. So good but sad.
