One thing I have learned about romance is that they don't waste a lot of time on establishing the premise.

Wondering how many times I've reread Matthew and Luke without realizing their versions of the Christmas story are totally different... I guess when you've heard a synthesized version your whole life it's difficult to notice.

I have literally never read a romance book.

It's wild what a religious system can accomplish when all the emphasis is put on "theology" and "right doctrine"; all you have to do is string together a theological defense of abusive behavior and it's no longer "abuse" it's just "the truth".

First of all, totally here for the dressing down of Wayne Grudem. Fuck that guy. Second, very strong argument here against the possibility of reform movements within evangelicalism. There is quite literally a 100+ year history of evangelical Christianity resisting progressive reform. To use examples from the book, look how they treated Rob Bell vs. how they justified Trump. A narrow gate left and a wide gate right.

Interesting thesis, that evangelicalism has less to do with theology than it does disseminating "correct" political ideology through the media and bible colleges. Does a good job establishing that appeals to "tradition" are largely invented. Certainly reflected in present movements, like the one to establish that "empathy is a sin".

Did you know Jonathan Edwards arguably drove his own uncle to suicide "in despair of his own failure to feel God's grace"? Certainly didn't come up when my religious educators were breathlessly praising revivalism...

Dropping real recordings of her therapy sessions into the audio book this close to the end was a power move.

Way too many worksheets for an audio book. And there's no attached PDF, they just read the charts out loud. Pretty hard to follow.
