So far I hate the MC, Jake. I’ve almost put the book down three or four times.

I’m done with Cabal, and I really enjoyed it! It feels a bit rote at first—especially when you figure out what the real subject of the story is—but it’s fresh and intriguing even forty years later!

I don’t know if it says something about me or about the media I’ve been exposed to or something… but I don’t find this book particularly horrific. I don’t mean to suggest that it’s not enjoyable, because I’m enjoying it quite a bit! So far it’s 5 stars!

JCO’s story was weird (not surprised, I’m not an Oates fan and i think all her stuff is weird in an uninteresting and incomprehensible way, almost unhinged). The next story, “The Woman in the Hill” by Tamsyn Muir was spooky and unsettling in a fun way! I liked the suggestion of something horrific lurking beneath the actual words; still I think that the story could have benefited from a bit less suggestion.

Not a fan of the first story, from Joyce Carol Oates. I never really liked her writing, it always felt like too much of the story was in her own head and she wouldn't share it.

(nice) Wow, I hate virtually every man in this book. I wonder if the author did that on purpose?

This has scared the s--- out of me so far and I love it!

“Julian,” Helen Clarke said, “Lucille does not want to hear it...”

*Emma jumps around at the back of the audience waving her arms, yelling “I do! I do!”*

So far I’m right in line with Mary Katherine in wanting all the people in the town dead...

Still chuggin'... still enjoying it though, it's just dense!

I think the paragraph on page 201 that starts with “In the morning La takes me to the school. ...” is my favorite paragraph in the whole book, because Yasodhara describes the children as unbroken.

Wow, that’s intense.

This is an excellent book! It's very slow reading though (it's very dense and sometimes I find myself wanting to explore a concept further)...

Zeus’ wording reads like it’s straight out of the Iliad. Simmons did some /work./

“The road turned south—left to Daeman—“ I love this little innocuous turn of phrase, which Simmons uses to connect direction with the current MC (not that “the road started west” would be bad, but this way we are that much more in the MC’s head)

And Zeke reminds me of Franklin...

This book references Franklin’s expedition to the Arctic so much, and it reminds me so much of _The Terror_ (Dan Simmons), and Erasmus even reminds me of Crozier in that book... it sort of makes me want to revisit _The Terror_... It’s good so far! I’m intrigued
