Woah. I mean that in the heaviest, but also, respectful way. I had no idea what I was starting to read when I opened this book, but I am shaking my head by his construction of words and sentences- beckoning you to look the brevity of life, the pain of loss, but also the beauty, right in the face. Wow. Wow wow. This is the gentle and compassionate 'real talk' that I am all about.

I'm gonna love this.

I can tell this is a book I have to hold in my hand and underline. And it might wreck me.

Reading this is like so much of Appalachian lit for me. A place I've never lived, but a place whose sensibilities, phrases, relationship with place, were passed down to me by the family before me that did. There are phrases and paragraphs that literally make me stop and go, woah. Some of the culture angers me, like switch beatings on kids and such, but then, other parts feel like returning home to parts of me.

So many thoughts! Many positive. Some just considering nuance where she is speaking in black and whites (ha! The irony).

I can't wait to review this book. I think she is wise. Very wise. Just not the wisest, as much of America has decided she is.

I'm 20 pages in and I love it.
