This year, I vow to stop struggling through books I think I "should" read. That means I'm putting down 1984, Robin McKinley's Deerskin and that super depressing one about the Trail of Tears. Oh, and Octavia Butler's "Wild Seed" 4 pack. The first book is depressing the hell out of me.

Lisa is finished with Dodger
I can't do it. I just can't get into the book. I know it's only been 3 chapters, but I have no interest in Dodger, the girl or the two gentlemen.

Having a tough time getting through this one. It isn't what I expect from Pratchett and I keep setting it down, or deciding to read something else.

I don't even remember this book or why I put it down a month ago, which tells me I'm unlikely to continue reading it. I think I'll go ahead and DNF now.

Unsure if I will finish. I HATE the first book. Grace is a busybody and Tox has the world on his shoulders. I don't like either of them. And really? Falling in love in about one week and one date? They don't even KNOW each other!

I would just like to express how annoying I find gifs and the like in book reviews. Please give me your words to read, not someone else's talent with manipulating images.

I see that I am 13 books behind in the challenge, and shake my head. I've read more than one book per day on average so far, and if I included my re-reads I would have crushed the challenge a couple of months ago. Next year, I need to do a smaller challenge because it is stupid for me to spend so much time reading. I need to get outside more often.

I just downloaded a free book called "The Werewolf Cowboy", and I cannot tell you how much I'm looking forward to laughing my ass off while reading it. I'm sure it's not intentionally funny, but I'm hoping it's a mess of OMGWTFBBQ proportions.

I'm at various points in three separate books, and I'm trying to decide if I should bother continuing. Two of them are NA (which I loathe) and the other is a billionaire CEO book where the hero completely mis-judges (and the word JUDGE is completely accurate) the heroine and is a douchebag. I think I just talked myself out of them.

About 1/3 of the way in, and I'm irritated. The hero is dead-set against having children for reasons that are perfectly valid and legitimate for him. The heroine thinks he is overreacting and will change his mind one day. I've been told I'll change my mind about not having kids, and at 42, it still hasn't happened. It drives me crazy that the heroine dismisses his convictions like this.

I'm really not sure if I can bring myself to keep reading this. The "hero" rapes the heroine repeatedly during the first week of captivity. Where was the trigger warning in your author note, Kristen? You forgot that, but not all of your other writing twitches: faces shoved into necks, badass outfits, men being sweet when they show an uncharacteristic ounce of human compassion.

Having a very tough time with this, as none of the characters are sympathetic, and it's confusing.

I just voted in the Semi-Finals of the Goodreads Choice Awards, and realized where my primary reading interests lie: YA Fantasy. I've read at least half the nominees or am a fan of the authors. Now I get to update my want to read list again!

I just updated my "want to read" list with stuff that's already on my Nook. It looks more impressive that it really is (which isn't very at all). I did order some non-fiction to be downloaded/shipped today, so I'm being somewhat intellectual.

I'm struggling with this book, and what seems to be the complete lack of agency by the female protagonist (I hesitate to use the word "heroine"). So far she has drifted along and let others take care of her, and I was almost shouting at the book when SPOILER she is drugged by the villain and then raped by the hero, the hero acting in the guise of helping her avoid a worse fate and under the influence of magic. ARGH!

Update: still trying to read this, over a week later.

We're on the downhill slope (ha, heading down Volcano!) and I'm very glad that I went back and started over so I could read thoughtfully. Just a bit more to go and I'll finally be done, however I'm sure I will keep reading about Hawaii. In fact, James Michener's "Hawaii" in on my TBR shelf.

I'm reading it again, actually as I decided not to finish previously, saving it for my trip to Kona HI. I'm still uncomfortable with the book, but being here in Kona makes it much more evocative. Tomorrow I go visit the palace in downtown Kona that I've read about, and the first Christian church built in Hawaii in 1820-ish.

I'm only partway into the first chapter and I can already tell that this book will make me uncomfortable, and angry with the missionaries and Marines who overthrew Queen Lili'uokalani, and all those who set things up so that it could happen.
