This is an obvious case of “the author’s name will sell anything so why spend money on an editor”.

I know I complain a lot about the dumbing down of novels and films but this just takes the biscuit. The metaphor isn’t even thinly veiled, you keep being told over and over and over again (in case you missed it the first, second and third time) what the physical black box stands for. The ironically self-aware narration style then just confirms that no active thought is required when reading this.

How can Dick be such a genius but be utterly incapable of writing at least ONE female character that isn’t a caricature? All across his oeuvre women are either sexy cardboard cutouts, whiny annoying brats or both.

… and apparently if you don’t subscribe to a mindset of believing in a higher power (God/universe/whatever) you’re evading some action you know you must take.
