Because I couldn't get enough of reading about diseases in the last book, I guess. Research for my novel.

was initially intimidated by this book's length, but it's a surprisingly fast read. there's a lot going on but i'm not having any trouble keeping up.

lazy worldbuilding. herrani sound like lowkey racist amalgam of poc cultures colonized by europeans. valorians have vaguely victorian-ish social mores/dress/customs yet women serve in combat. very shallow depiction of slavery/colonialism with no real nuance or substance.

still reading bc it is entertaining and characters intrigue me. i've come to expect crappy world building from YA

This book is seriously an endurance test. Literally nothing happens. I'm only still here b/c I like the characters
