Rereading via audiobook since I don’t have my copy anymore :/

My least favourite of the series so far. I loved Ryan and the mental health/anxiety rep, but Fabian didn’t seem fleshed out enough, I feel like we learn little about his art and music (his career and hobbies) especially compared to how much Ryan’s sections are taken up by hockey. Fabian is portrayed as the opposite of big, masculine, athletic Ryan, but this makes up most of his character.

Beautiful, heartbreaking, and hopeful. I’m in love with Mellors’ writing.

This book is strongly character-driven, the sisters feel well-rounded and real. Sometimes with multiple POVs I favour one over the other, but that wasn’t the case with this one.

Small qualm: every synopsis emphasizes that the sisters all return to New York together, but this doesn’t happen until 200 pages into the 340 page book…

The MC is meant to be infuriating, yes? Is Alderton getting back at all the poorly written female characters by men??

I love it, I hate it. It’s like reading my own brain: the existentialism, the suicidal ideation, the constant concern for everyone around me — I’m sure that I’ve had every single one of her thoughts at some point.

If anyone read the synopsis of this book and went "wow that sounds like a Taylor book"...you're absolutely fucking right.

1817 Edinburgh!? A woman disguising herself as a boy to attend school because she wants to be a doctor!? A secret love interest who works in a theatre and is a body-snatcher on the side!? YES.

I was getting ready to give this book a solid 2 stars….but the reveal at this point in the book??? My jaw is still on the floor.

I’m loving the actual historical research that’s taking place! They’re using real archives and databases (e.g The Old Bailey)

This modern Frankenstein is an excellent meditation on human psychology. Theo is such an interesting lead and I love the parallels between his experiences and Alicia's mental condition.

Alicia is diagnosed with BPD, a disorder that Theo generally questions. Theo argues when other characters make comments like, "Oh, she's a typical borderline," allowing for an interesting discussion on the diagnosis.
