God I missed books that aren't romantasyslop

This finale is a slog

I'm mixed.

Everything is five stars except the obscenely bad age gap, which is really squicking me out. We're talking 25—30 years. Barf me out.

Bro this book is just about sadomasochism. Like, seriously. It's just S&M smut. It's gooner bait for people who like toxic yaoi. I'm very, um... bored.

I have thoughts, some positive, some less-than-flattering towards the author's view of gender.

I've been reflecting on this series more between books. It makes me sad to say it, but I think "queer" books written by non-women will always prioritize and provide emotional interiority to their male characters that their female and non binary characters are not permitted. Baoxiang, Esen and Ouyang are made sympathetic and vulnerable; Ma and Chongba cruel and cold girlbosses with no softness. I'm sad.

They use the term "Abbotess" instead of "Abbess." Huh?

Way too many fucking boy babies in this book. Wow, how lucky for your patriarchal culture that you weren't cursed with any daughters to have to write a POV from, eh?

New favourite character is Orrin, who constantly brags about donating to charity and saving orphans. Protagonist hates orphans. I laugh every dam time
