Good book but OMG such a frustrating thing to read about!

A good read but I'm not sure I really want to deal with the inherent sadness of the situation of being separated from family without cause.

Aaahhhh, lovely to read some beautifully written prose after the last dud of a book.

I know that elegant literature is not the deal with Hislop's novels but I at least enjoyed the stories of her previous ones. From this one, I get the impression she doesn't understand her own strengths and weaknesses as a writer. It's like some kind of vanity project. Looking forward to finishing this, it'll be the last Hislop novel I read.

Finally a key ingredient of a decent story... some conflict. Not particularly plausible, but it's something.

300+ pages in and we've only just reached the events covered by the first paragraph of the blurb on the back. Hislop is better at telling stories than this usually. It really needs a good edit.

One hell of a slow burn

A lovely yet sad read.

Not quite sure some of this translates adequately into English, but it's still moving to read.

I'm into the last chapter, an addition to the book since it was first published, following the election. It may as well have been written before it though, there is passing reference to the election result but mainly a diatribe about the half century leading up to it. I've only got another 15 pages but I don't think I can finish it.

The lack of leadership skills, disinterest in alternative perspectives and disregard for the wider context is just baffling.

So black and white, left vs right (left is always wrong) using "progressive" as a pejorative. Her decision-making does make sense inside her very narrow world view, but there is very little evidence of understanding, or even curiosity in, effective leadership.

This book was clearly written in a rush. It reads in the way she seems to have approached everything: crashing through each challenge and onto the next thing, without pause for reflection and always with a "I was right" mentality. Even things like the freeing of Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe after 5 years in an Iranian prison was summed up in a couple of paragraphs.

Yep, I'm doing it. I'm diving into the mind of Liz Truss. Wish me luck. So far the general gist seems to be: "Everyone is against me and should get with the programme. I'm not interested in other perspectives, I just need to WIN THE ARGUMENT and everything will be fine."

Relentlessly interesting.

This is just enraging. I have been sitting shovelling crisps into my mouth as I'm reading, in pure defiance of Doug and his "take x number of pounds off my girlfriend, please" attitude. Yes I KNOW she's a robot, but the whole idea that anyone would want to control everything about another person, if they could, fills me with dismay and disappointment.
