Sometimes life is hard, but then you remember that you've never had to eat your brother's roasted flesh in order to survive death of starvation after all 12 of your immediate family members died from famine and disease, and you remember that things could be infinitely worse. It's really not so bad here.

Why is this narrated in British English? The main character is American, and her Americanism (i.e. her "otherness" in England) is an important aspect of her character

Most of this book is Claire accidentally (and conveniently) stumbling upon a private conversation that is essential to the plot and then eavesdropping so the reader can have the information. The plot conveniences are very annoying
