Another one for our horror book club, I need it to be good. I need it to be real horror and not a drama about toxic relationships between friends and family dressed in a horror costume.

Call me an Ali apologist I guess but Nahri saying their friendship was built on deceit when way back when they started becoming friends Nahri knew it was initiated by the king for Ali to do is wild to me. I know that particular night when things went to shit in the first book was massive but jeeze is she really rewriting history here and Ali can't do anything but take it.

Nahri: "Ali had led us into a trap." That's not what happened girl lol. If I saw a tree root but didn't point it out before you tripped, I didn't make you trip. I didn't help, but it's not on me that you didn't see it too.

I haven't finished a trilogy/series that wasn't a graphic novel in years or read a book that contained 450+ pages in years so this is me attempting to do both of those with The Daevabad Trilogy, preferably all in one go even though I have books I need to read for work and others I started on for fun.

I had no plans of ever rereading this book - even gave my copy away to a friend 1-2 years ago - but I was recently reminded of Chakraborty's incredible knowledge of Islamic history and decided to return to this story; it helps that 2019 me rated this 5 stars and I hope I have a similar reaction by the end of it.

Reliving the experience I had w/ Summer Sons where the supernatural stuff is like 30% of the story and the toxic relationships surrounding and featuring the protagonist are the true "horror". We're also stuck again in the head of a deeply troubled and trauma-ridden protagonist who is dedicated to self-sabotage. Happy I'm reading this now before I make the same mistake of putting it on the library book club list.

Starting another book for another book club ahead of the game. Short enough to finish tonight if it ain't boring. So far, so good.

Yknow what this thing reminds me of a little bit? The creature from Smile. Not so much in how it passes itself around to people but moreso in how it takes pleasure in pretending to be real people and how it enjoys scaring people.

Well now I'm not scared at all. Probably should be disgusted - and there is a lot to be disgusted by - but now I'm just here for the ride. Trying to finish before midnight, this got me in a chokehold.

Oh this book is gonna actually scare me isn't it? Horror's always scarier when it's closer to your reality.

I'm finishing this book because it's for a library book discussion, but I'm rather ambivalent about the story. It's not good, not bad. Boring might be the most accurate description of my feelings. And the book is on the shorter end and yet I feel like not much is happening.
